World Cup Free Picks

Romelu Lukaku

Sunday, the first day of July, was an off day for our World Cup Free picks as we were unable to find an edge in either of the contests.  After coming off a 4 to 1 parlay of Greizmann to score and France to win, we decided to slow our roll.  Anyone who was faithful enough to read us was massively paid.

We were right to pull back on the reigns.  Both fixtures ended in penalties with Croatia beating Denmark and a surprising Russian squad upsetting a massively favored Spain.  Russia and Croatia advance to the Quarterfinals where they join Uruguay and France, both of which qualified on Saturday.

There wasn’t a lot there in terms of edge on Sunday.  The same challenges are there on Monday, but we do have a free pick for our readers.

Both games on Monday are a bit of a mismatch.  The favorites are taking on heavy juice and aren’t very affordable.  That makes straight moneyline plays a bit of a challenge.  We do think that both Brazil and Belgium will be seeing themselves through to the quarterfinals if you do want to lay the juice, but our interests are in over under’s today.

Belgium and Japan seem much more mismatched than Mexico and Brazil on Monday.  Let’s dive right in and find a winner.

Denmark vs Peru Free Pick

Eden Hazard

Every fixture of this knockout group stage has been a very competitive affair.  Two games have been decided by one goal.  The other two fixtures ended in penalties.

Incredibly, 14 goals have been scored in just 4 games.  The lids have come off the nets in Russia, and this has been one of the most entertaining World Cup’s in recent memory as a result.  With so many world class athletes on the pitch and the use of VAR, goals have been very common in this year’s tournament. This might be the top goal-scoring tournament of all time when it concludes in a few weeks time.

Japan take on Belgium in the second game of a two game schedule on Monday.  The forecast calls for a lot of goals.

Belgium will be playing a fresh squad.  After securing advancement from Group G after just two contests, Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard both sat out of the Belgian win over England.  The entire Belgium team is rested and ready to go.

The Belgians scored 10 goals in the group stage on their way to a 9-3 combined drubbing of Group G opponents.

Japan similarly had a ton of goals in its qualifying group.  While not as many as Belgium’s combined 12 goals for and against in competitions, Japan saw 8 goals in qualifying against Poland, Senegal, and Colombia.

This all spells good news for the over.  With 20 goals scored in 6 combined games, that leaves these teams with an average combined goal total of 3.3 per 90 minutes.

I think you see where we’re going with this pick.

Japan Belgium Pick

Goal Total: Over 2.5 (-125) @ MyBookie

We are sure that Belgium is going to beat Japan (we just wont pay the juice).  We are also sure that this game is going over 2.5 goals.  The Belgian squad is a machine, and if the Japanese have any intention of throwing 11 men behind the ball, it will quickly be thwarted by the size of Remelu Lukaku.  Defending won’t work for Japan in this.  They’re not physical enough.  That means they can’t play for penalties.

With Japan looking to play offensive minded football at least some of the time, it looks like a healthy chance that the over will hit here.  There’s a reason the juice is fairly high at -125.  We wouldn’t be surprised to see this particular line shift, so jump on it quickly!
