Big Ten Conference – Odds to Win

Big Ten Conference

Odds to Win Big Ten by BetOnline

The Big Ten looked like it was Ohio State’s to lose not too long ago, but things have changed with recent allegations coming out against head coach Urban Meyer. Now the league feels more wide open than it has in a long time, with teams having to navigate tricky situations both on and off the field. With odds from BetOnline, let’s take a look at the odds to win the Big Ten conference championship.

Ohio State Buckeyes

Odds to Win Big Ten: +190

Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa will need to provide leadership on the field in Urban Meyer's absence

Ohio State is still the favorite to win the Big Ten in terms of the odds being offered before the start of the season, but they sure don’t feel like a favorite after the things that have surfaced regarding the program. Urban Meyer has been accused of knowingly allowing a domestic abuser to remain a member of the coaching staff which, arguments about the role of college football in larger societal problems aside, can have huge ramifications on the Ohio State team itself.

Meyer has been placed on paid administrative leave from the program, which is to say that he is being paid to wait things out while an investigation into the situation is conducted. When that investigation is over, Meyer could very well be let go as the head coach at Ohio State.   That would make things considerably more difficult for the team that he has put into place to win a conference title.

On the field, the defense of Ohio State should be able to play well regardless of who is in charge. Nick Bosa, brother of former Ohio State standout Joey Bosa, will anchor a pass rush that will be a nightmare for quarterbacks across the league. Given the lack of truly great quarterback play in the Big Ten this year, the ability to pressure the quarterback should be a massive advantage this season.

Speaking of a lack of truly great quarterback play, the Buckeyes will be tasked with replacing JT Barrett, who managed to emerge from the Braxton Miller, Cardale Jones, and Barrett trio with a very good career as the signal caller in Columbus. It will be Dwayne Haskins starting at quarterback this year, who has been talked up as a potentially elite player, but hasn’t had the chance to prove it on the field just yet. Ohio State also boasts a formidable pair of running backs in Mike Weber and JK Dobbins, which should help Haskins as he gets used to playing at this level.

Ohio State has all of the pieces in place to make a big time run in the Big Ten and possibly the College Football Playoff.  However, with questions regarding who will be coaching the team this season, it may be a better idea to look elsewhere for now.  You can take the +190 if you don't mind the risk, but all things considered, we think the next team we'll be looking at is a much better value.

Wisconsin Badgers

The Badgers will attempt to ride talented tailback Jonathan Taylor to a Big Ten title behind a strong offensive line

Odds to Win the Big Ten: +240

Wisconsin is fascinating, in that they are never considered the best team in the country or even mentioned before the season as a contender to win a national championship. Yet, thanks to a very favorable scheduling situation in the Big Ten, the Badgers always have a chance to win the conference championship at the end of the year.  Wisconsin’s chances to win the Big Ten look as good as ever this season.

Their offense returns all but one starter, and one of their returning starters is the very dangerous Jonathan Taylor at running back. The presence of Taylor should do a lot to help Alex Hornibrook, who may be the weak link in the Badgers offense due to his struggles with turnovers from the quarterback position.  As usual, Wisconsin’s strength offensively is in their offensive line.

An even bigger strength than who the team has on its roster, though, is who the team has in its division. Wisconsin plays in the Big Ten West, which allows them to take on opponents like Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota, while avoiding the likes of Michigan, Ohio State, and Michigan State for the most part. There is some crossover between divisions during the regular season schedule, but the current setup definitely makes Wisconsin the favorite to represent the Big Ten West in the conference title game in most seasons.

If Wisconsin can get there this year, they could take on an Ohio State team with an interim coach, or a Michigan team that has never made it that far under Jim Harbaugh. All of this is to say that getting better than 2-to-1 odds with Wisconsin could be a great bargain when you look back on it in December.

Michigan Wolverines

Odds to Win Big Ten: +300

Ole Miss transfer Shea Patterson will have to be great for Michigan to contend this season

Michigan is receiving a lot of love heading into the 2018 season, as they are expected to take a big step forward. A big reason for the thought that Michigan would get better is that they finally might have found an answer at the quarterback position. But there are still some questions that the Wolverines will have to address if they are going to win the conference for the first time under Jim Harbaugh.

The Wolverines’ answer at quarterback is Shea Patterson, who has transferred to Michigan from Ole Miss. He is miles better than the options that Michigan has had in recent years, with players like John O’Korn failing to light it up during the early years of the Harbaugh era. This has made it so the team has been unable to afford falling behind late in games, when the clock dictates that teams pass the football.

If Michigan gets better this year, it will be a first for them with Harbaugh as their head coach. The team has failed to finish better than third place in their division since he took over, routinely failing to outplay Ohio State and Michigan State. Getting 3-to-1 odds on the Wolverines is a good idea if Patterson can step in and deliver right away, but they are a case of a team who has failed to prove themselves, making it hard to justify backing them.

Best Bet to Win the Big Ten:

Wisconsin +240

The Badgers could be celebrating a Big Ten Title this season

When you think about it, Wisconsin has a great value proposition in a wager like this. The team is likely going to win the Big Ten West, meaning that you are likely getting +240 odds for one game. And in the Big Ten title game, Wisconsin would likely be listed at shorter odds than that.

With Ohio State in limbo, Wisconsin at +240 to win the Big Ten is a great value.  We can easily see the Badgers raising the trophy in Indianapolis, so we love the odds we're getting here.
