Welcome back to LazyBets EPL picks and parlays! We’re moving towards the winter part of the season. As temperatures cool down, the importance of the action heats up as do manager’s seats. The first week of October has a lot to offer for Premier League fans with some marquee matchups taking place. Liverpool and Manchester City square off on Sunday in a battle of #1 and #2 on the table. Saturday’s action features a very important fixture for a certain man. Manchester United vs Newcastle may be the last match for a certain manager. We’ve got a bet on this one. Do you have a bet on whether Jose Mourinho lasts the weekend?
Let’s dive right in to this week’s free soccer picks and parlays and Man U takes on Newcastle United.
Manchester United are the laughing stock of the Premier League right now and it’s all because of the man who’s leading them. Are you surprised? It seems that this is what you get when you hire the arrogance of the “special one.”
He may bring short term success, but the long term side effects of one Jozy Mourinho are club reputation threatening. He leaves every team worse than when he began. He is indeed special. Every team he touches needs special attention and repairs after he departs. Just ask Chelsea.
Manchester United are in terrible form. They haven’t won at home since the opening day of the 2018 campaign. This is some of the worst form that Manchester United has been in since entering the top flight of play in English football.
The Red Devils are winless in their last four matches at home. A fifth consecutive non-victorious performance would be just the second time Manchester United failed to win 1 game in 5 since 1999.
A loss to Newcastle at home would mark the worst run of play for Manchester United since the 1989-90 campaign. The “field of dreams” is no longer that for Man U fans. Instead it’s their opponents who enter away fixtures with tangible dreams of achieving 1 to 3 points.
While Manchester United haven’t won, they have walked away from home fixtures with minimal points. They’ve only lost one game domestically all year and have drawn everything else. An outright loss to Newcastle seems very unlikely given the fact that Newcastle has traditionally been in relegation talks during recent seasons.
Manchester United were able to win this fixture last year handily. A 4-1 result over Newcastle would be welcome relief to a supporter base that is starved for a home performance of quality.
Newcastle United Analysis
Newcastle United enter this game equally as distracted as Manchester United but for different reasons. The team has been up for sale since 2017 and apparently still is. Dominating this week’s headlines are stories of Rafa Benitez’s future as Newcastle manager in addition to alleged failed deals for the club.
Benitez has had qualms with Newcastle over their lack of ability to bring the team talent. The sale of the club has hampered competitive business and that’s no easy thing for a manager to endure. Where Mourninho can spend 100 million in a summer without blinking, Benitez is having trouble getting fractions of that to secure competitive squad players. No manager wants to be in a place where he can’t succeed because of what he is given to work with.
Newcastle’s board has come out strongly with encouragement around Benitez after a midweek dinner with both the headman and the team. Managing Director Lee Charnley has vowed to buy Benitez players he needs before the summer. Morale should be up.
Even with increased morale, Newcastle is still facing an uphill battle. Manchester United may be struggling, but it’s not because they don’t have the talent. Newcastle seems to lack the talent altogether.
The team fought as hard as it could against Leicester last week at St James Park. The crowd was loud and the players didn’t lack effort. All they could muster for shots on goal was one distance attempt from Jonjo Shelvey in a 2-0 loss.
It is extremely unlikely Newcastle scores in this game. They’ll be out for a 0-0 draw and 1 point will be a win for them if they can frustrate Manchester United into another day of blaze’ production.
This game shouldn’t be very good. Neither team look up for competition this year. Manchester United should crash out quickly from European competition and middle on the Premier League table. Jozy Mourinho won’t last until winter. Benitez could endure the same fate. No one who buys Newcastle should expect it to be anywhere but the Championship next year.
The draw is attractive and attractive when it comes with an inevitable Mourinho viral blow up video, but don’t be enticed. The under is much better value in this one. We see Manchester United somehow picking up 3 with a 1-0 or 2-0 win on Saturday.
