Carlos Vela has impressed in the 2018 World Cup for Mexico.
Due to injury, our World Cup Free picks have been day to day. The neck is still very much acting up, but when we’ve been able to hook ourselves up to the keyboard, we’ve been winners in our recent free picks and parlays for the World Cup. We nailed Portugal to lead after the 1H with Quaresma’s wonderstrike against a pesky Iranian squad just two days ago.
On days we haven’t been able to make it to the keyboard we can only apologize. I have stim hooked up to my back as I’m writing this and am doing the very best to get these to the readers. Play like a champion kids! No excuses! (except for, you know, when you skip a few articles).
Today we’ve got a full slate of games with Group E and Group F concluding. Our Free World Cup pick focuses on our friends south of the border as they take on Sweden in the concluding game of a group that Mexico would like to exit winners of. Both of these teams come into this game in better form than the LazyBets staff. Their rosters are both injury free.
The final leg of Group F concludes as the Mexicans take on the Swedes at Ekaterinburg arena. Mexico need a point here to be certain of advancing from this group as winners and second place is still very much up for grabs in this group.
This is a big game for both teams as this Group still has a ton to do in terms of deciding who advances. Mexico still need a win or a draw to be sure they’re advancing to the World Cup Knockout round. If defending champion Germany wish to advance, they will need a win over South Korea in their game. can’t beat Mexico by a margin of more than one goal in this scenario that the bookmakers had as most likely prior to the tournament. Of course, many other scenarios could ultimately play out in today’s fixtures.
Sweden will stick with the 11 selected in their last match. Marcus Berg and Ola Toivonen are expected to lead the Swedes in attack. We expect the Swedes to be peppy in bouncing back today. They of course suffered a heartbreaking loss to Germany in the final seconds of play which put their World Cup into a state of peril and causing a must win situation today.
It is expected that due to the need for points, the Mexicans will go mostly unchanged as well. Mexico is coming off a 2-1 victory over the South Koreans in their second game and are still riding on a high after their initial victory over the Germans. Mexico are no stranger to the knockout round, though success there has been a different story. The Mexicans have advances out of the last 6 World Cup group stages only to fall in the last 16.
They could face a similar fate here with a tough Brazilian squad potentially waiting in the wings.
Given the gravity of this game for both teams and the Mexicans need for just 1 point, we expect a coy affair in this one. It’s not fun, but a 0-0 or 1-1 draw seems a likely scenario. The affordable +120 on Mexico to win seems low and indicates that Vegas expects a defensive outlook from El Tri in the final game of the group stage. The goal total reinforces this with heavy juice on the Under 2.5 total goals (-140).
